HOTELS

Seville

  • Hotel Murillo – comfortable and reasonably priced considering its fantastic location in the old, historic heart of Seville, and right next to Murillo Gardens park (Jardines de Murillo). It’s on a narrow, pedestrian-only street so your taxi has to drop you off at the entrance to the Gardens, and you walk down the narrow lane a short distance to get to it. A cafe across from it puts tables out on the cobblestones between them when it is open, so you can literally walk out of the hotel door and sit down in the open air for a capuccino. Relatively spacious room with modern amenities (air-conditioned! not always the case in comparable hotels in Spain) and extremely cordial and helpful staff. Calle Lope de Rueda, 7, Sevilla.

RESTAURANTS

Madrid

  • Viva La Vida – comida vegeteriana. Calle Huertas, 57 (at Costanilla Desamparados) – yum! Much organic, not all.
  • La Mojigata – wonderful, light Mediterranean-style cooking. Restaurant was brand-new when we visited, and we ate there a second time as well. Delicious. Operated by some young women; here is their Web site about their cuisine, etc. Much of the food, if not all, is organic. Calle Lope de Vega, 7, Madrid.

Cordoba

  • La Fragua – delicious berenjenas fritas, croquettes, queso, nice atmosphere – blue flowerpots, white wall in courtyard outside. C/ Calleja del Arco, 2 14003 Córdoba.
  • Bodega Mezquita – wonderful berenjenas fritas (fried eggplant), awesome sauces, everything was great. Friendly and great atmosphere. Ate there twice. Calle Cespedes 12, 14003 Cordoba.

MISCELLANEOUS

London

  • tkts – Half-Price Tickets for Shows – There are lots of knock-off places selling these but they should be avoided because they don’t provide the same benefit to the theatres. The official half-price booth, tkts, is at the bottom of Leicester Square, at St. Martins Street. From the Web site, “The tkts booth in Leicester Square (founded in 1980 as the original Half Price Ticket Booth) and tkts at Brent Cross are the only official half price and discount theatre ticket outlets in London operated by the Society of London Theatre, the industry body that represents London theatres.” We got tickets the same day for Billy Elliot, and they were great.
